We are leading manufacturers of Cornstarch packaging, often referred to as PLA. We offer the full turnkey solution; from initial designs of your packaging to cutting, printing and shipping your unique packaging.

Cornstarch packaging uses polylactic acid (PLA) plastic made by fermenting the plant sugar and starch. Compared to traditional plastics, PLA plastic is much more environmentally friendly and sustainable as it releases fewer greenhouse gases during production and does not include toxic materials.

OK compost HOME is a certification scheme for products that are degradable in home composting.

OK compost HOME is not based on a standard but is the basis for several standards!

It seems important to remember that the OK compost HOME certification program does not explicitly refer to a specific standard but details all the technical requirements that a product must meet in order to obtain the certification. It should also be remembered that, as a pioneer in this field, the requirements of the OK compost HOME programme, defined in 2003 and never questioned since then, have served as the basis for the drafting of several standards such as:

  • Australia: AS 5810 (2010) – Biodegradable plastics – Biodegradable plastics suitable for home composting
  • France: NF T 51800 (2015) – Plastics – Specifications for plastics suitable for home composting
  • Europe: prEN 17427 (2020) – Packaging — Requirements and test scheme for carrier bags suitable for treatment in well-managed home composting installations

Our products are BPI certified to meet the ASTM D6400 specification. When it comes to making marketing claims regarding a product’s biodegradable or compostable attributes, the ASTM D6400 certification is the industry’s gold standard. The ASTM D6400 is the North American equivalent of the European EN 13432. Both specifications require that biodegradable/compostable products completely decompose in a composting setting in a specific time frame, leaving no harmful residues behind.

It is important to note that the ASTM D6400 is an ASTM specification, meaning specific results must be attained to receive certification. Some manufacturers, who have not met the ASTM D6400 specification, may reference other ASTM standards to promote their products. Usually, these companies will reference the ASTM 6954 or the ISO 14855 as proof that they have surpassed some standard for biodegradation. In fact, the ASTM 6954 and the ISO 14855 are standard procedures to be followed for conducting tests and have no pass/fail requirements for heavy metal content or a product’s ability to disintegrate.

The ASTM D6400 is currently the ultimate test for a biodegradable/compostable product’s ability to decompose in ideal composting conditions.

Think about it…. If a product can’t “go away” after being ground up, tumbled, heated to 165 degrees, and placed in the optimum setting for decomposition, a well-run composting site, would it meet most consumers beliefs of what a biodegradable/compostable product should be?

Because of the number of unsubstantiated claims in the marketplace, the State of California enacted into law a requirement that products sold in California must meet the ASTM D6400 specification to claim any “biodegradable qualities.” In fact, the state now requires the word “compostable” to be used to define a product’s ability to decompose.
